INTACT - Inclusive Trauma Informed Care Adventure Therapy Activities for refugee children and youth in Greece

The Intact project aims to promote the psycho-social well-being and social inclusion of war-affected refugee children and youth. Through innovative approaches, such as Trauma-Informed Adventure Therapy (TIAT), the program highlights the importance of connecting with nature and participating in alternative sports activities to address trauma.

Project Objectives
The project’s goal is to support the mental health and well-being of refugee/migrant children and youth, enhance their social inclusion, and raise awareness among stakeholders about the significance of trauma-informed care.

The project, which began in September 2024 and is coordinated by Terre des hommes Hellas, focuses on supporting the mental health and psychosocial well-being of children and adolescents with a migrant or refugee background in Greece. In collaboration with KMOP and Adventure Therapy, it introduces a therapeutic programme grounded in nature and trauma-informed care, designed to respond to the emotional needs of children who have experienced displacement.

More specifically, INTACT implements experiential, nature-based interventions through Adventure Therapy. Outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and cycling help refugee children and youth to better integrate into host communities.

Through pilot actions, the project promotes resilience and social inclusion for children by engaging them in nature-based group experiences. At the same time, it trains coaches and community professionals in trauma-informed principles, helping to create safe and supportive environments for young people. Finally, INTACT aims to raise awareness among professionals and the wider community about the importance of integrating this methodology into services for children.
